What We Do

V+M Structural Design (V+M) is founded on the desire to deliver creative bridge engineering solutions that merge aesthetics with economical design. Our approach to design is rooted in engineering principles and follows the ethos of developing clear and predictable structural load paths. V+M takes pride in providing clients with high quality deliverables that are constructible and engineered to last.

The firm and its founding principal have a rich project portfolio in bridge design, characterized by creativity in developing clean, expressive aesthetic forms that are functional and constructible. An understanding of the full range of bridge systems includes medium- and long-span arches, trusses, cable-stayed, suspension, and girder bridges designed  in both steel and concrete. We select bridge solutions most appropriate for a given site, taking in consideration of geotechnical conditions, methods of construction, seismic response, and specific owner requirements..

Pedestrian Bridges

Squamish Pedestrian Bridge, designed by Schaun Valdovinos (Principal) while employed with Hatch Mott MacDonald.

A true passion of V+M is the niche of pedestrian/cycling bridges. With a commitment to building a sustainable future, pedestrian/cycling bridge projects help to connect communities divided by natural and manmade barriers. We begin our holistic design approach by pouring over the site constraints, topography, and cultural/environmental context to then conceive unique solutions that are appropriate for each project.

Our pedestrian bridge expertise extends to dynamic behavior from wind and pedestrian loading. The proven approach of creating designs that are highly rationalized with a strong appeal to users has resulted in successful and award-winning projects. Our founding principal has designed economical, landmark pedestrian bridge projects for public and private clients throughout the US and Canada, having held a key role on 23 pedestrian bridge projects and studies.

Roadway Bridges

Schaun Valdovinos (Principal) was a part of the design team for the Sea-to-Sky Highway Improvement Project while employed with Hatch Mott MacDonald.

Roadway bridge design is a key business practice of V+M. Our team is highly experienced in delivering projects at all phases, from conceptual and planning stages through to detailed design and construction. Bridge rehabilitation and retrofit is an important part of infrastructure maintenance for owners. V+M personnel have experience with bridge inspections, evaluating existing structural and seismic capacity, and developing retrofit options for clients looking to extend the life of their assets.

Transit Structures

Schaun Valdovinos (Principal) was a part of the design teams for the Sound Transit Central Link, South Link and East Link Light Rail Projects while employed with Hatch Mott MacDonald.

Transit-related infrastructure forms a significant portion of V+M’s personnel experience both locally and across North America. V+M personnel have in-depth knowledge of transit systems and their delivery, having worked in both the owner and designer roles on over 10 major light rail transit (LRT) and bus rapid transit (BRT) expansion projects in the past several years. Our team members have worked extensively on the LRT system in Seattle, designing the elevated guideway structures from conceptual phase through to detailed design and construction. Our team members have also been a part of the Owner’s Engineer team for the Advanced LRT (Skytrain) system in Vancouver, BC. This included developing conceptual structural arrangements and design criteria for the planned extension and reviewing structural deliverables on behalf of the Owner.
