Ala Wai Canal Crossing Alternatives Study

Client: City of Honolulu

Duration: 2018 – 2019

The City of Honolulu is undertaking an initiative to provide improved connections between the Waikiki, Ala Moana and McCully/Moiliili neighbourhoods. As a part of the City’s Ala Pono project, a new bridge for pedestrians, cyclists and emergency vehicles is being considered at the foot of University Avenue.

The proposed crossing at the midpoint of the canal will aim to improve accessibility for local residents and visitors alike, as there are currently only links across the northern portion of the canal. Additionally, the crossing would provide an alternate route for evacuation in the event of an emergency.

V+M was retained by the City of Honolulu to develop the bridge concepts for the new crossing over the canal, which includes project definition, renderings and a planning-level cost estimate.

V+M is also currently engaged as a part of the team for the preliminary engineering phase as the bridge technical advisor and designer for bridge structural elements and approach structures, collaborating with the design team on structural detailing for the preferred bridge system.
