6th Street Active Transportation Bridge

Client: City of Courtenay

Duration: 2020-2023

The City of Courtenay is planning to construct a new pedestrian and cycling bridge over the Courtenay River at 6th Street to improve active transportation connectivity in the city. Currently, users on foot or wheels must take the narrow sidewalks of the existing adjacent 5th Street roadway bridge to access either side of downtown, which requires cyclists to dismount. The 6th Street Bridge will provide a safe, comfortable route that will offer a seamless connection with the Riverway Trail and planned future cycling infrastructure in the surrounding areas.

V+M was retained by the City to provide consulting services for a detailed options analysis and final design of the new crossing. The design is a symmetric cable-stayed bridge with towers each side of the river that utilizes a novel base-isolated design approach to maximize resiliency in this high seismic area.

The V+M team supported the City with public outreach efforts, City Council presentations, and produced photorealistic renderings along with final Plans, Specification and Estimate.
