SENIOR BRIDGE ENGINEER

With a 35-40hr work week and a small firm atmosphere, V+M is looking to hire a bridge engineer with 10-20 years of experience in the field. The ideal candidate holds an SE in the state of Washington and is technically sound in the design of steel and concrete bridges with experience using various codes (examples include: AASHTO, WSDOT, Caltrans, and CSA S6 CHBDC). The individual is collaborative and communicates well with colleagues, partner firms, and clients and is characterized by a high degree of commitment to project work with an emphasis on quality and organization. We are looking for an individual that enjoys lifelong learning with a desire to take on responsibility to work on the design of pedestrian, roadway, and light rail bridges and associated structures. 

About the Role

The individual will be part of a tight-knit team, working with other bridge designers and drafters responsible for the execution of bridge engineering (analysis, calculations, drawing markups, and specifications), checking, and coordination for projects. The role requires a level of comfort using technology, including communicating via teleconference for regular meetings to collaborate with, advise, and assist team members in other locations.

  • In collaboration with other V+M engineers, select the appropriate structure type, layout, and configuration. Actively participate in and bring ideas forward for continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Perform structural analysis using LARSA 4D (or similar software) and prepare organized calculations for various structural components ranging from superstructure elements to substructure to foundation design. Seismic design experience is advantageous.
  • Interpret and properly incorporate the project design requirements including design codes, bridge design manuals, and project-specific contract requirements to ensure that the design meets or exceeds project standards.
  • Independently prepare, review and edit engineering reports and specifications with oversight from Principal Engineer.
  • Prepare cost estimates using project-specific quantities and V+M unit price data.
  • Coordinate with the CAD team in a reasonably independent manner to prepare drawing packages with an appropriate level of support from other engineers for projects with varying size and complexity.
  • Perform design checks, peer reviews, and provide feedback in a positive fashion on the work prepared by others.
  • Complete your own work assignments—and assignments supervised by you—on schedule and to the required quality standard. Assemble and review structural deliverables in collaboration with team members and with other multi-disciplinary partners.
  • Actively coach, guide and mentor developing team members.
  • Depending on experience and interest, the role might also include project management tasks, including scheduling, project planning, budgeting, progress reports, and communication with clients and partners.
  • Effectively communicate and coordinate with internal team members and external stakeholders to meet project needs. Reach out to industry suppliers, and fabricators such as for bearings, expansion joints, steel girders, and precast plants as needed. Strong written and verbal communication skills are advantageous.
  • Prepare contract packages, including technical specifications, special provisions, quantity take-offs, engineer’s estimates, and Issued for Construction drawings with support from team members.
  • Supporting construction administration tasks, such as reviewing shop drawings, RFIs, and other submittals during the construction phase, and performing construction field reviews (valid driver’s license required).
  • Be a lifelong learner; stay current on industry trends and emerging technologies.

Key Qualifications

  • Degree in civil engineering (a master’s degree is preferred) with an emphasis on structural engineering.
  • 10 to 20 years of relevant professional experience in the design of steel and concrete bridges.
  • Registered as a Structural Engineer in the state of Washington. Additional registration as a Professional Engineer in the state of Washington, state of California or province of British Columbia are advantageous.
  • Strong skills in structural analysis software platforms (such as LARSA 4D, CSI Bridge, SAP2000, etc.), Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and familiarity with AutoCAD. Experience with L-Pile, Xtract, Response2000, CAST, and/or SketchUp are advantageous.
  • Experience with a wide range of structure types including steel members, precast and cast-in-place concrete, retaining walls, and other miscellaneous structures. Experience with cable-supported structures, arches, trusses, and timber is advantageous.
  • Experience providing design services during the construction phase of past projects is advantageous.
  • Work well on a team and independently as a motivated self-starter with a clear understanding of the design process.
  • Experience with preparing proposals, fee estimates, and participation in business development is an asset.
  • Goal-oriented, reliable, logical and clear thinker, proficient in English.

INTERMEDIATE BRIDGE ENGINEER

The ideal candidate holds a PE in the state of Washington and/or a PEng in the province of British Columbia and is technically sound in the design of steel and concrete bridges with experience using various codes (examples include: AASHTO and/or CSA S6 CHBDC). The individual is collaborative and communicates well with colleagues, partner firms, and clients and is characterized by a high degree of commitment to project work with an emphasis on quality and organization. We are looking for an individual that enjoys lifelong learning with a desire to take on design responsibilities for bridge projects and associated structures.
