The City of Seattle plans to build a pedestrian and bicycle bridge across Interstate 5 (I-5) that will connect communities, neighborhoods, businesses and schools in the Northgate area. Existing pedestrian and vehicular crossings over I-5 occur to the north at NE Northgate Way and to the south at NE 92nd St, separated by a distance of approximately 0.9 miles; a need for improved connectivity between these existing links was identified for the community.
The final design of the bridge consists of an 1812-foot long viaduct that consists of two retained filled embankments and seven individual bridges (Unit 1 through Unit 7) that threads between existing wetlands and span over access road, other wetlands, I-5, parking lots, and 1st Ave NE. The project will also provide a spur connection to the future Sound Transit Northgate Link light rail station and a multi-use path from the west landing of the bridge to the intersection of College Way and N 100th St.
V+M was retained by the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) to carry out a peer review of the final design for the bridge.
